A few weeks ago my teammate and I came across a YUMMY doughnut shaped beignet like creation. I was so excited! It brought to mind yummy beignets from Cafe du Monde and sweet friends that I LOVE! I went to class the next day determined to learn the Arabic word for beignet and to my surprise, my teacher told me that I could use the word "beignet" and they would understand exactly what I wanted! So, fast forward a few weeks to yesterday. My teammate and I went exploring, and boy did we ever explore the medina! After we walked and walked around the medina and "got lost" for a little while, we went back to the center and decided to stop and grab a coke and finally order our beignet. We waited until the late afternoon knowing that they would be hot and fresh! I ordered our cokes without any problems (Coca afek - Coke please) and moved on to order the beignets. They gave me this puzzled look and begin describing different pastries. I kept saying "no, it's round with sugar on top, like a doughnut..." After a few minutes, our kind waiter, said, "oh... and noded his head with understanding... " I thought to myself, "YES! I've communicated clearly to him!!!" After a little while, he came back with these two pastries but sadly, they were NOT beignets! Oh well, I guess what I thought was the word for "beignet" was not...
I'll be sure to ask my teacher again what the word is, you can count on that!!!
